In 2021, I got the honor to serve as Range Officer for the USPSA Georgia State Championships. As they do in many higher level matches, I got to choose from an awards table, and I got awarded a pair of Hunters HD Gold shooting glasses, and I must say, they have been the best pair of safety glasses, shooting or otherwise, that I have ever had the pleasure of wearing.

First, what makes them so usable is the glasses designed so that no matter how bright the day is, or how dark, I see the same view through the lenses. This is a wonderful feature that lets me wear them in the brightest day, or in stormy weather.

Second, the frames are very comfortable, with side shields. They are very sturdy, and easily cleanable.

Third, they adhere fully to ANSI standards, making them the safest glasses I own. For those who may not know, I am a degreed chemical engineer, who spent over 20 years in the petroleum and specialty chemicals industry, before moving into engineering recruiting. One of the earliest things I learned in industry is the first thing that new shooters should be taught – SAFETY COMES FIRST. Never enter an operating area with wearing the appropriate safety gear – eyewear, hearing protection, safety boots, hard hats, and the like.

Likewise, in shooting, we have safety rules we follow, the most well known being Jeff Cooper’s Rules. To the Four classic rules, I added Rule Zero: Eyes and ears! In other words, always wear safety glasses and hearing protection.

The American National Safety Institute – ANSI – sets the standard for safety glasses under code Z87.1.

So, when I got my glasses, I noted they are code Z87-2+, meaning they are specified as impact resistant.

As a side note, I reached out to the safety manager at the company where I work, and he agreed that in addition to being shooting glasses, these would be very good for me to wear as working safety glasses, were I to go into an industrial environment that required safety glasses.

Also, I must say that working with Brian Conley at Hunters HD Gold was one of the easiest order processes I have had the pleasure of having.

In summary, I have found my Hunters HD Gold shooting glasses to be the safest, most visually appealing, and most comfortable shooting glasses I have ever used, and I highly recommend them to my fellow shooters, and to those who need eye protection.

Shooting glasses are an important but, often, under-appreciated piece of equipment. We only notice the critical protection they offer when they do prevent an injury, and shooters are usually unenthusiastic about using them. The best shooting glasses for you are the ones you wear every time you shoot. Some shooters will benefit from expensive specialized glasses, and some from impact-rated glasses that are more affordable. We’ve been testing many different styles and types of shooting glasses (read about how we evaluated the best glasses) to give you insight in picking what’s best. Ultimately, that’s up to you.

Best Shooting Glasses, Reviews and Recommendations

Best Overall: Wiley X Apex

Wiley X apex shooting glasses

Pros

Cons

Key Features

Wiley X offers a lot of quality shooting glasses, and I have been wearing the Apex daily for a couple months now. These are stylish and practical sunglasses that offer great protection in both shooting and working environments. They have a Triloid nylon frame that houses the lenses, steel temples, and rubberized ear pieces. The Apex also comes with optional side shields — both removable and permanent — for applications or jobs that require them.

One thing I really like about the springy steel-temple design that this and similar models like the AXE incorporate is how well they stay in place. Some of the older Wiley X poly-framed glasses would become loose and wouldn’t hold securely when placed atop my hat — a point of constant irritation. This design is superior and looks good too.

These shades are also available in prescription form and are an excellent crossover for the casual shooter or handgun shooter who wants a good quality pair. I do find that the top inside corner of the lens smudges with sweat and negatively impacts my sight picture, but that’s true of most bridged or two-lens safety glasses.

Best Budget: Tifosi Masso

tifosi masso shooting glasses

Pros

Cons

Key Features

The Masso by Tifosi is a great pair of budget shooting glasses that’s available in both clear and smoke color schemes — the latter for bright conditions. These are similar to many common safety glasses from companies like 3M, but they have a few features that elevate them. The Masso are impact rated, and feature a small brow shelf to prevent flying debris from getting behind the top of the glasses, as well as comfortable integrated nose pads.

The temples are flexible and feature rubber texturing that helps them stay put on your head or if you place them on top of your hat. Others with plastic only temples tend to slide loose. The rounded lenses provide good coverage and are great to have as extras stashed in your vehicle or range bag. They’re comfortable and convenient, and that’s the most important for compliance with actually wearing shooting glasses.

Best for Clays: Ranger Supershot

Key Features

Shooting glasses kits for clays games can get real expensive real quick — think upwards of a grand. But if you want the same type of performance without paying the top-end price, then consider Ranger’s new Supershot three-lens kit.

Ranger is a well-respected name in the shotgun sports world and their Supershot line is ideal for anyone looking to win their local clays tournament. The kit includes three lenses:

All of these lenses come from Ranger’s Claysight line, which is designed in partnership with Zeiss to enhance target color and reduce glare. These glasses really do help you pick up targets more quickly and track them more easily. I love how positively the lenses clip into the magnetized frames. Swapping them in and out is a breeze. -Alex Robinson

Best Tactical: Oakley M-Frame 2.0

Oakley M-Frame tactical shooting glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

The Oakley M-Frames are the wrap-around shooting glasses that many other designs imitate. These were standard-issue for many troops in the early 2000s during the Global War on Terror and offer excellent durability, performance, and impact/fragment protection. There are several different versions of the M-Frame, but they consist of a flexible plastic frame with a solid bridge across the top of the lens. The temples are slim and designed to be worn in conjunction with helmets, electronic hearing protection, and night vision goggles.

The SI M-Frame 2.0 comes in a zippered hard case with an extra clear lens. Lenses have the nose piece installed, and are replaced by removing a small clip atop the frame, then flexing the bridge to pull the lens out. I’ve had a set of these for over 15 years and, despite some wear and tear, they’re still one of my favorite sets of eye protection.

Best Prescription: Hunters HD Gold B-Raze

Hunters gold HD B raze prescription shooting glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

The B-Raze from Hunters HD Gold is a light and low-profile set of shooting glasses that combine excellent lenses with a strong flexible wrap-around frame. Like other tactical-type glasses, these position the wrap-around lenses close to the eyes and have slender temples that fit nicely under over-ear muffs.

The Hunters HD Gold lenses adjust according to ambient light and provide great contrast and UV protection. These are specialized and expensive, but a smart choice for the pistol or three-gun shooter that needs the best visibility. They’re even more ideal for a shooter who needs a prescription because they are versatile for many light conditions.

There are no side shields, but the lenses wrap around the side of the eye and provide a great protective peripheral barrier. Because the bottoms of the lenses aren’t rimmed, the glasses provide an increased field of view compared to fully rimmed models.

Magpul Defiant

Pros

Cons

Key Features

Magpul, whose stake is in tough-as-hell polymer rifle magazines, also offers some great eye protection for shooters. The Defiant shooting glasses are a wrap-around style with a single uninterrupted lens. They’re designed to fit medium and large heads the best, and feature slim, flexible temples with rubber pads for a sure grip. They do a great job staying in place when sweaty,

These are available in polarized or non-polarized, but a simple rotating lock on each temple allows easy changing of lenses. They only come with one lens, but you can buy additional ones for about $40 — $25 for the clear lens. They offer great visibility and the wrap-around design provides good peripheral protection from gasses and debris. The only downside of this lens design is that it’s pretty exposed when handling or storing the glasses. If dropped or tossed in the range bag, the lens coatings will likely get scratched.

Magpul Rider

Magpul Rider sunglasses, shooting glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

Magpul’s Rider sunglasses are more general-purpose shades, but also offer good protection for shooters. They aren’t Z87.1-rated because of their shape and coverage, but they’re made with the same durability as Magpul’s rated shooting glasses, with thermoplastic ballistic lenses. They’re stylish glasses with a variety of frame and lens options, including polarized and non-polarized.

Frame width is ideal for those with medium-sized heads, slightly narrow for large-headed folks. But because the temples are thin and flexible, they’re still comfortable for me to wear. The Rider glasses start at $50 with non-polarized lenses, and you can get them with clear lenses as well. These are ideal for anyone who wants a pair of shades that aren’t too expensive, but offer good protection and utility for most shooting applications.

Wiley X Jakl

Wiley X Jakyl shooting glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

The Jakl from Wiley X is a new set of shooting glasses that offers great flexibility and protection. It’s a two-lens design with a frame similar to wrap-around single-lens glasses. This positions the lenses close to the eye and I found it easy to use them with optics. This can be more difficult with traditional two-lens glasses with parallel lenses.

There are multiple lens/frame combinations available in the Jakl, including kits with different lenses. Like many of Wiley X’s other offerings, these are also available with prescription lenses. They have thin, flexible temples with rubber molding at the bottom. I really liked using these with over-ear muffs as they didn’t pinch or put pressure on my ears and the ear cups seal well. The wrap-around frame fits nicely under a helmet for tactical applications and the clear lenses should work well with night vision.

For shooters who prefer the wrap-around style of frames but don’t want full single lenses, these are a great choice. Like other wrap-arounds, the exposed bottom edges of the lenses can be prone to scratching if not stowed in a case or cloth.

Hunters HD Gold Magnum

Pros

Cons

Key Features

If you’re in the market for premium shooting glasses that offer best-in-class definition and protection, the Hunters HD Gold Magnum is right up your alley. This model is styled after many popular two-lens sunglasses with different frame colors available. They are light but feature robust impact-resistant construction with integral clear side shields. The bottom and top of the frames feature a lip which helps prevent debris from flying into the eyes from above or below.

The lenses are what make these some of the best shooting glasses though. I found that the yellow-tinted Hunters HD Gold lenses offer great contrast and definition, but also adjust to ambient lighting conditions and provide great UV protection. Blue and Ruby lens colors are also available, and these can be ordered for prescriptions as well. Serious shooters will be hard-pressed to find a better option.

Leupold DeSoto

Leupold DeSoto shooting glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

Leupold’s DeSoto is one of the newer additions to their performance eyewear line and is another great choice for everyday glasses that will work well for shooting, fishing, and other applications. These shades are light and airy, at less than an ounce, and the large lenses offer a great field of view. They fit well under ear muffs and are great for pistol, shotgun, or carbine shooting, but I have to periodically clean them off when shooting precision rifles. Sweat collects at the top of the lenses, blurring my sight picture.

I really like the minimalist temples, which have an embedded rubber grip to keep them in place. They hold steady during dynamic shooting and movement, and though they aren’t advertised as impact rated — possibly due to the lack of side coverage, the lenses are made of shatterproof ballistic material.

Leupold Sentinel

Leupold sentinel shooting glasses, tactical glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

The Sentinel shooting glasses from Leupold are a single-lens wrap-around design that looks similar to the Oakley M-Frame. They have a durable polymer frame and interchangeable ballistic-rated lenses. Like other good shooting glasses, their temples fit nicely under ear cups and the wide single lens provides full eye coverage with a wide field of view.

I really like these for a set of range bag glasses. I can use the clear lenses for indoor shooting and the dark lenses for outdoors when it’s sunny. Like similar designs, these lenses are exposed and prone to scratching if stored improperly or used day to day. They’re great for tactical applications and fit well under a helmet, staying in place during dynamic movement.

Smith Operator’s Choice Elite

Smith optics operator's choice shooting glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

Smith Optics’ Operator’s Choice Elite are two-lens shooting glasses that are designed to fill the same role as many of the wrap-around single lens tactical glasses. They curve and fit tightly around the face to work well in conjunction with hats, helmets, and ear pro. The large lenses are fully rimmed and well protected, and the wide temples provide good side protection from debris and flying fragments.

There are several tiers of the Operator’s Choice, including Elite Polarized lenses, regular polarized, and non-polarized, ranging in price from $125 to $245. Like others that have a tight protective fit at the brow, the top of the lenses can smudge with sweat at the inside corners which isn’t great for precision rifle shooting, but for most applications it’s a non-issue. Like similar tactical shades, these are also ballistically rated and are ideal for shooting handguns and PCCs at steel targets.

Tifosi Alliant 2.0

Tifosi alliant tactical shooting glasses

See It

Pros

Cons

Key Features

The Alliant 2.0 sunglasses from Tifosi are a really good value for a single-lens wrap-around design. They have many of the same design elements and ballistic ratings as more expensive tactical glasses, but are much more affordable. They come with two additional lenses (red and clear) and swapping them only takes me a few seconds. An included zippered hard case houses the glasses and a lens sleeve to protect lenses not in use.

The temples are flexible and grippy and they seal up pretty well under over-ear muffs. My only complaint is that — at least with my facial structure — the glasses seem to tilt back when I wear them, pressing the frame and top of the lens onto my brow. Most glasses don’t do this. It’s not a big problem but does cause them to smudge and collect sweat more than other single-lens designs. Overall, these are a great pair to have in the range bag and are adaptable for indoor and outdoor shooting.

How I Tested the Best Shooting Glasses

To test these shooting glasses, I and other OL editors have used them in many different applications ranging from day-to-day driving, to wrenching on vehicles, and shooting of course. Through many trips to the range, I alternated through each of these glasses shooting them with precision rifles, pistols, PCCs, and carbines. I also made sure to use them with magnified optics, red dots, and iron sights.

Dedicated Vs. Casual Shooting Glasses

When choosing the best shooting glasses for you, you need to decide whether you’re looking for dedicated, purpose-driven glasses or everyday shades that will double as your shooting glasses. There are no hard-and-fast rules, but your application should affect your choice.

If you want dedicated shooting glasses, you won’t regret investing in the right ones. Many shooters will find single-lens wrap-around glasses ideal, or may favor models specific to their discipline. These are going to be glasses that are stored carefully, well-maintained, and expected to last a long time.

For the casual shooter, the fully-rimmed two-lens glasses are often the best bet. Through everyday use, they are more subject to being taken on and off, set down on countertops and dashboards, and generally subjected to more abuse. Highly curved or non-rimmed lenses are going to get scratched more and won’t give you out-of-the-box clarity for long. Pick well-protected lenses that look good and fit your style. They’ll work better than the glasses you weren’t wearing because you want to baby them

Is Polarized or Non-Polarized Better?

Many shooting glasses have the option for polarized lenses. Polarization can help reduce glare off shiny surfaces, so it can be advantageous. However, for more tactical applications, or if you’re using a lot of electronics while shooting, you might want to opt for non-polarized. If you’ve been wearing your fishing glasses day-to-day, you’ve probably noticed that polarized lenses can make it difficult to see some electronic screens.

Go to your average indoor or outdoor range and chances are you’ll see people wearing eye protection they purchased from the local big-box or discount store, or some cheap pair of eyewear that the local range loaned them for the day. These same people are likely to debate either online or with their friends, the relative merits of one brand of optics versus another brand. They’ll then go out and spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on an optic, mount it on their firearm, and then get behind that optic and look through it using eye protection that costs less than a fast-food combo meal. That seems to me like it defeats the purpose of that expensive optic.

Some gun owners realize this, and then go out to buy a set of eye protection that will bounce ricochets like Michael Jordan bounces a basketball. This is important, because after all, the primary purpose of protective eyewear is to protect your eyes. However, the materials that are used in these battle-hardened brands of eyewear might not provide the clearest, sharpest view, which means that while your eyes are well-protected, your target goes un-hit.

What’s needed, then, is eyewear that protects your eyes while not affecting (and maybe improving) your ability to hit the target, and that’s where Hunter’s HD Gold Eyewear comes in.

First, a little background is in order. I have been wearing corrective lenses since I was six years old. In addition to this, I worked a half-dozen years in a high-end retail camera store and another dozen years as an advertising and commercial photographer. As a result of this, optical quality has been both a passion and a necessity in my life. Having good eyewear meant I could focus my camera and correctly judge colors and lighting. Bad eyewear impeded all of those activities and would put my career in jeopardy.

Which, in a way, is what happens in the shooting sports, which is why Hunter’s HD Gold puts so much attention to optical clarity and, more importantly for shooters, optical contrast. Contrast is an often-overlooked element of eye protection. Bright, well-defined edges between targets, scoring areas on that target as well as a sharper front sight all contribute to better hits on your target. This is one area where Hunters HD Gold really sets itself apart from its competition, as these lenses provide a sharper, more-defined image than my regular lenses.

Hunters HD Gold provided me with two pair of eyewear for this review: A set with gold-colored lenses for the range and a set of polarized sunglasses for outdoor use. The Trivex material in both pairs is lighter and thinner than typical glass or polycarbonate lenses and provides up to 43 percent more light transmission. Increased light transmission means I can see better on cloudy days than with my daily wear eyeglasses. This is also due in part to the yellow tint of the lenses, which work well in that type of light. The blue-tinted, polarized sunglasses work fantastically in the bright Florida sun, allowing me to see things like the controls of my radio while driving, yet they still protect my eyes from bright light and UV radiation.

Can I tell you that a set of Hunters HD Gold eye protection improved my marksmanship by a measurable, repeatable amount? No, I can’t, there’s too many other variables involved in that sort of test. I can, however, tell you that the first time I put them on, I could instantly tell that they made a difference in how things appeared around me. Everything around me seemed clearer, better-defined and easier to see. I was immediately sold, and asked for a pair for review.

Seeing quickly and seeing precisely are absolutely vital to success in the shooting sports, so it makes sense that we do all we can to make sure we can accomplish these tasks, and a pair of lenses from Hunter’s HD Gold will definitely make that task easier for you.

Hunters HD Gold & Optical Prescription Lab

Jake Martens, DMM, L5050

Standing under the pavilion at a match in Florida, a guy in some yellow 70’s shades walked up and stuck out his hand to introduce himself, “Hi, I’m Brian Conley from Hunters HD Gold. I would like to do more with USPSA.”

Normally, in my usually cheerful and approachable demeanor during a Nationals Championship when a thousand things are happening at once, I would have exchanged business cards and waited to see if this person followed up. However, this was definitely a “Right Place, Right Time” situation.

Growing up, I would get up early on Saturday mornings to catch wrestling on TV. This was pre-WWF and WWE, wrestling from Memphis with guys like Bill Dundee, Jerry Lawler, Don Bass, and Pat Tanaka, with host Lance Russell and Jerry Calhoun as the referee. One of the most notable characters from those early mornings was Jimmy Hart, the Mouth of the South. Now, I’m not saying that when Brian approached me, I was having flashbacks to a mullet-wearing, megaphone-using promoter in a red suit, but it may have subconsciously registered. I’m not sure I have seen Conley with a megaphone, but I am willing to bet that there are some photos of him with a mullet.

Brian and I have discussed this not-so-chance encounter several times on different podcasts and with others, but it has been a rollercoaster since 2018. This coming fall will be six years of an ongoing relationship that has definitely set a standard on how to promote a brand within the shooting sports and establish yourself as the “brand” that everyone knows. But there is so much more to the traveling sideshow that many see but do not understand what goes on behind the scenes.

Hunters HD Gold is a brand within a company called Optical Prescription Lab (OPL). Hunters HD Gold is a lens in a pair of eyewear, but what sets them apart is that they are a lens manufacturer. OPL is a lab that makes lenses for independent eye care practices throughout the southeast and across the US. This really sets Hunters HD Gold apart from all other eyewear brands. You have frames you like; as long as it has two lenses, they can make you a pair of glasses. It’s that simple. Whether it is a prescription or not, they are in the lens manufacturing business.

The van, the tents, the sideshow that we see at matches is just the tip of what really goes on. In 1977, OPL started as a small optical lab in downtown Birmingham, AL. It started and continues to be a family-owned independent laboratory. The lab is now in Pelham, AL, and has continued to grow into an advanced and highly capable lab that provides premium optical products to eye care practices across the country. While Conley might be a one-man show on the road, there is a team back at the lab that gets the real job done.

The lab was established by Jean Lanier, who ran the company until passing it on to Sherry Lanier, her daughter. Sherry is the saint that puts up with Brian, his crazy ideas, and writes the checks, so to speak. Sherry is a wonderful lady that I have had the pleasure to meet a few times. She is the person that keeps Brian on the rails with his ideas that I may occasionally add my two cents to. Back at OPL, Chris Connell wears many hats, but his main role is Hunters HD Gold Customer Service. He is the guy that makes sure all the promises Conley makes on the range actually happen! I kid, but seriously, Chris is the guy that gets your shooting eyewear orders taken care of from start to finish once the order and frames hit the lab.

The process is very involved and has many steps to ensure everything is correct. From checking the frames and taking accurate measurements to the products and materials used, it’s impressive to stand back and watch. Once a frame is measured and entered into the system to start the process, several people are involved, and each step is under a controlled inspection process. The lenses start out as a large puck and go through multiple highly calibrated machines to ensure everything from the prescription to the fitting to the frame is precise. This is before the lenses are coated to either be the HHDG Golds, Rubys, or the new AktiveBlu technology.

When it comes to supporting the shooting sports, few companies can compare to what Hunters HD Gold has done in such a short period. In 2017, Hunters HD Gold was established as an eyewear brand under OPL, and Brian hit the road to see what it was all about. He attended a match in October 2017 and met Michael Bane and Bryan Hacker of Tandemkross. Having Michael Bane not only fill your head with information but more or less explode it set Brian off on his path of being the brand that everyone knows. The first match that HHDG set up as a vendor was the US Steel Nationals in March 2018. We had just rolled out the Preferred Vendor Program, and HHDG was one of the first to sign up. The first USPSA match that Hunters HD Gold was a vendor was the Mississippi Classic in May 2018. It was then in October 2018 that Brian set up at the “9 Days of Nationals,” and we met to discuss bigger things. By the end of 2018, HHDG had attended 22 matches, donated over $57,000, and had been working on those “Something Big” ideas.

In 2019, Hunters HD Gold became the Official Eyewear of USPSA and Steel Challenge. After several conversations on how to make that advertising and sponsorship program work, we launched the announcements shortly before SHOT Show that January. The first year as the “Official of,” HHDG sponsored 110 matches with $107,993 in products. Throughout 2019, Brian was meeting and talking to match directors, members, friends, and family of everyone he could. He wanted to know who everyone was, what their background was, where they were from, and what drove them to the shooting sports. This wasn’t just friendly southern hospitality; he was building a brand and wanted to know who his potential customers were and what they wanted.

From all those interactions with thousands of people, Brian launched Hunters HD Gold Custom. One thing he learned is that not all safety frames are sexy, and looking good while shooting is just as important. So starting in 2020, if you had a frame you loved, you could send it in and have lenses made for them, including your prescription. This was a game-changer and now tied what OPL did to HHDG and offered endless possibilities when it came to your frames and prescription. After all, OPL is a lens manufacturer. Then Covid hit. When the largest source of your business comes from eye care practices that are shut down, things start to be concerning. However, people in the shooting sports still needed eyewear, whether it was for shooting or just daily wear. OPL and Hunters HD Gold reached out to the membership to help solve those needs in 2020. Brian also managed to sponsor 124 matches that year with $134,231 worth of products.

2021 was a big year and turning point for HHDG. 164 matches were sponsored with over $144,000, and new products were launched. Brian worked with several trap shooters and developed the Hunters HD Ruby lenses. He also became the Official Eyewear of Metal Madness Shooting Sports Association. If that wasn’t enough, he decided that people needed more of him and launched a podcast. If you haven’t caught on to the Jimmy Hart reference yet, maybe this will help. The “Behind the Lens” Podcast was something Brian wanted to do after all the time he spent talking to so many interesting people at the range. He wanted to have a platform where people could share their stories. Oh, he also bought a van and headed out on the Magical Mystery Tour in 2021. The sideshow was just starting to grow. The van is a rolling Pandora’s box of all the ideas along with all of the companies that Brian has supported and built relationships with.

After he hit the airways and the two years of Covid restrictions were finally behind everyone, everything hit full speed ahead in 2022. 254 matches were sponsored with $356,600 in product and certificates. The new Semi-Rimless Safety Frames were now available. New machines were added at OPL as well. HHDG was at matches all across the country, not just USPSA, and Steel Challenge, but the big AK Matches and End of Trail, the big SASS Championship. Never one to sit back and relax, Conley was already working on new things for 2023.

After establishing the brand in the shooting sports, he started looking at other opportunities and last year introduced AktiveBlu. AktiveBlu is a lifestyle daily wear style of lens. It is a “Life Reactive” lens designed to adapt with your daily lifestyle indoors and outdoors. The lenses seamlessly change from a calming light sapphire to a dark mirrored sapphire finish outdoors. From inside to outdoors, on the water, or while working at home, this new technology is a great daily wear option.

337 matches were also sponsored last year with $1,168,600. Yes, you read that right; in a year, Hunters HD Gold more than tripled its support of the shooting sports in 2023. The Hunters HD Gold Cup Series was launched to recognize members that shoot club matches. IDPA partnered to offer certificates for members renewing. USPSA & SCSA clubs that re-affiliated certificates were sent out for the clubs to use. If you were attending Range Officer classes, discount certificates were also provided.

So far in 2024, HHDG is sponsoring and supporting the shooting sports at 369 matches for $1,888,000 in products and certificates as well as advertising and support. Hunters HD Gold added the Single Action Shooting Society as another “Official Eyewear” partner. The Hunters HD Gold Cup Series II started up earlier this year, and the winners from 2023 have been awarded their traveling trophies, championship belts, and checks. We still have the other half of the year to go!

Back at OPL, they are kicking it up a notch to keep up and added Lane Evans as Director of Operations. Lane and Brian have known each other and worked together in the past. The lab was hoping when I stopped by before the start of the World Speed Shooting Championship for a quick tour. OPL can take care of all your optical needs, not just shooting glasses. There are a lot of different colored lens out on the market for your consideration for shooting, so which one is right for me? Great question. Let’s spend a little time discussing a few of the popular options from Hunters HD Gold. In 2017 Hunters HD Gold took the Steel Challenge world by storm with top competitors showing up to matches with a gold color lens which would transition from a bright gold to a dark gold based on the lighting conditions. The main reason why many shooters have embraced the gold lens is the contrast they present. White painted targets seemed crisp and clearer like they have never been seen for the first time. Admittedly, there was a visual sensory overload at first and it took a couple of moments for your eyes to get adjusted to the contrast. The added clarity enabled the eye to focus sharply on the plates and many competitors commented they could not miss.

The first part of 2021 saw the release of Hunters HD Ruby, which is a ruby color. After trying a pair, I had to turn down my Vortex Razor red dot. The ruby colored lens accentuated the red color of the red dot. This same phenomena happened with my red fiber optic front sights on both my rifles and handguns. The value was realized when I would transition my handgun at an accelerated speed, my eyes had a tendency to lose the front sight. With the Hunters HD Ruby, it was easy to find. I liken it to a road flare in front of my eyes; it is hard to miss it. The Ruby lens is darker than the gold lens. I personally do not have an issue competing in low light with the Ruby. This was proven at the 2021 West Florida Steel Challenge Championship in Clearwater Florida. If you have never competed at the Wyoming Antelope Club (WAC), all of the bays are three-sided concrete with a concrete roof. To say the lighting conditions are low, this is a drastic understatement. Securing the overall match win while competing with Hunters HD Ruby lens is a testament to the right lens, for the right shooter, at the right lighting conditions.

In summary, there are a lot of lens colored options out on the market. Hunters HD Gold has been on the forefront of listening to the hunter and shooters to provide options right for them. If you are at a match, make sure you stop by and see Brian Conley at the Hunters HD Gold tent to demo a pair. You do not know what you are missing until you try a pair on!

Shooting has been more than just a past time for me; it has been an opportunity to make lifelong friends around the country. Over the past five years, shooting major matches in different states has led to some interesting shooting conditions. First, I recall shooting in the sand of Idaho where you did not dare drop a magazine on the ground or you would have to take it all apart to get the last grain of sand out. The most challenging and unique set of shooting conditions I experienced was the first time I participated in a match in Mississippi at the 2017 Mississippi State Steel Challenge Championship outside of Biloxi.

Living in the South for the past 15 years has afforded me the experience to feel some of the hottest of hot days. It has also presented some of the most humid days I have ever endured. When I arrived at the match in Mississippi, I had all of my gear with me in the hotel room the night prior, to keep it secure. The first stage of the day was Smoke and Hope. I was given the “Make Ready” command. I pulled out my JP GMR 13 topped off with a Vortex Razor. As I took off the protective optic cover, I noticed some condensation. As soon as I pushed the up arrow to turn on the optic, a white-like haze flashed over the glass. It was the most immediate and ferocious fog I have ever seen. Despite several attempts at wiping away the condensation, it kept returning. I ended up shooting the stage with a partially obstructed optic.

After the match, I remembered my Hunters HD Gold glasses came with Z-Clear (www.z-clear.com) and it kept my glasses from fogging up when shooting. When I returned to the hotel room, I applied Z-Clear to my optics in hopes it had the same impact as my glasses. The next morning it was even more hot and humid. I took my same rifle out of the bag, took off the optic cover and it worked! There was a slight fog on the glass and then it dissipated as fast as it arrived. I apply my Z-Clear every week to my Hunters HD Gold glasses and I now treat my optics as well, if I know I am going to shoot in hot and humid conditions.
