Clear Vision on the Range: Why Hunter’s HD Gold Is Built for Shooters

Anyone who has been shooting competitively for any length of time has likely heard of Hunter’s HD Gold.

A few years ago, I was introduced to the brand and its founder, Brian Conley, at the USPSA South Carolina Section match. Brian is a storehouse of great stories, and during our conversation, I learned just how deeply involved Hunter’s HD Gold (HHDG) is in shooting sports and broader Second Amendment advocacy. I have since become a regular listener of their "Behind the Lens" show on Rumble and follow HHDG across Facebook, Instagram, and X.

What stands out immediately is Brian's genuine passion for shooting sports and the high-performance lenses he crafts. After placing my first order, I quickly realized that the entire team shares that same dedication. I have since become a loyal customer, regularly purchasing both HHDG and AktiveBlu products.

The optical quality of these lenses is exceptional. Over the years, I have received several pairs of Oakley sunglasses as gifts; by having HHDG retrofitted into those frames, I get to keep using the thoughtful gifts my wife bought me while benefiting from superior clarity and performance. Beyond custom lens replacements and prescription options, HHDG and AktiveBlu offer a wide array of stylish, high-performance frames that carry an ANSI Z87.1+ safety rating.

In addition to superior clarity, these lenses deliver remarkable consistency across changing light conditions. During a recent match that started under heavy morning overcast at sunrise and ended under bright midday sun, the visual clarity remained steady all day. It was not until I took the glasses off that I realized just how effectively they had compensated for the intense sunlight.

Their slogan states that "the glasses change so you don't have to," and that has proven true in my experience with both the Gold and AktiveBlu lines. From dawn to bright sun to dusk, the clarity and light transition are flawless.

The AktiveBlu line is equally fantastic for travel, shooting, and everyday wear. On a recent road trip, I put them on in the morning and did not take them off until reaching my hotel at dusk. They were so comfortable that I completely forgot I was wearing them.

My original pair of Gold lenses has seen years of heavy use. Competing in three to four USPSA matches a month, along with occasional Steel Challenge and IDPA events, means my gear takes a beating. Despite the constant use, the lenses show no signs of scratching or unusual wear, which speaks volumes about their build quality and durability.

To keep things organized, I store two pairs of glasses alongside my in-ear electronic protection in an HHDG yellow protective case. Keeping everything in one dedicated place ensures I never leave my "eyes and ears" behind regardless of which range bag I am using.

Call me a brand loyalist, but it is hard not to support a business that pairs an outstanding product and top-tier customer service with robust support for the shooting community and the Second Amendment. The amount they give back to the sport makes me proud to be a customer.

That enthusiasm has spread to my family as well. We now own multiple pairs of HHDG and AktiveBlu glasses, to the point where I keep two pairs of AktiveBlu in my truck just because my daughter refuses to wear anything else. Tweens are notoriously selective, which might be the ultimate endorsement of all.

Why I wear Hunters HD Gold

Quality Matters Shooting glasses are like many pieces of gear we use; ignored until they hurt performance. Lenses that block too much light in dark conditions, frames that are too tight and fog on humid mornings and the classic junk plastic that obscures detail on targets for far shots are common among the new to […]

High-Performance Eyewear On and Off the Range

I first discovered Hunters HD Gold eyewear in 2021 when I began competition shooting. What drove me to try them was a piece of shrapnel from a bullet striking a metal target, which cracked the cheap frame of the eye protection I was wearing at a USPSA match. Luckily, Hunters HD Gold had a booth […]
